The Day Los Angeles Was Born

"El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument/Olvera Street"
On September 4, 1781, a group of 44 people, known as Los Pobladores—a mix of Indigenous, African, and Spanish heritage—set out to establish a small settlement in what was then part of New Spain.

They named the new town El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles—The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels. Quite a mouthful, right? Over time, it was shortened, reshaped, and eventually became the “Los Angeles” we know today with almost 4 million inhabitants..

That little pueblo? It grew fast. By the early 1800s, it was a bustling farming town. In 1847, it became part of the U.S. after the Mexican-American War. Railroads, oil, film studios, and waves of immigrants transformed the city across centuries. But it all started with 44 settlers, a dusty trail, and a big, beautiful name.
